LG G2 manual leak reveals rear buttons, nano-SIM, microSD slot

LG G2 manual

The LG G2 is almost upon us, and we'll be live from New York City this Wednesday for LG's big announcement event. Between LG's pre-launch announcements and a healthy flow of leaks, we already know a reasonable amount about the G2, however a leak of the device's manual has a couple more secrets to spill.

Firstly, cluster of buttons on the back of the device is confirmed to contain volume up, volume down and a power button — not a fingerprint reader as had been speculated. In addition, the manual shows a nano-SIM slot, making the G2 only the third Android phone to support this standard. (After the ASUS Padfone Infinity and the recently-announced Moto X.)

Also revealed are a microSD slot for expandable storage, and a removable 2610mAh battery.

The LG G2 may no longer be much of a mystery, but we're looking forward to finally getting our hands on the phone this Wednesday regardless. Keep it locked to AC for full coverage.

Microsoft cuts Surface Pro tablet prices by $100

The Surface Pro.

(Credit: Microsoft)

Microsoft reduced the price of its Surface Pro tablet this weekend by $100, a few days after revealing that it has spent more money on marketing the in-house tablet than it has generated in revenue.

The reductions, which were first reported by The Verge, cuts the price of Microsoft's 64GB and 128GB tablets to $799 and $899, respectively. The discounts come three weeks after Microsoft cut the price of its Surface RT tablets by 30 percent.

Sales of Surface RT tablets, which debuted last October, have been seen as tepid. The tech titan revealed on Tuesday that it has earned $853 million in revenue from its Surface tablets since their debut last fall. However, that is less than the $900 million the company had to pay for Surface RT inventory adjustments and also less than the $898 million Microsoft paid for Windows 8 and Surface advertising.

Even though Microsoft revealed its revenue from the Surface tablets, it did not release the number of units sold or specify the individual revenue from either the Surface RT or the Surface Pro. In March, Bloomberg reported that Microsoft likely sold around 1.5 million Surface tablets to date. Though 1 million of those sales were for the RT version, that number was about half of what Microsoft initially expected, according to Bloomberg.

In comparison, Apple reported last month that it sold 14.6 million iPads in the last quarter alone.

Multi-million pound college investment will support British industry

More than 20 further education colleges throughout the country will invest ?168 million in building modern facilities thanks to Government investment. Many of these new projects are for skills training in sectors vital for growing British industry including engineering, construction and automotive.

The Government is targeting those in the greatest need of help and those that can best support growth by investing ?77.7 million through the Skills Funding Agency. This will be matched with more than a ?91.1 million investment from colleges.

This funding is the second round of the College Capital Investment Fund (CCIF), through which ?550 million is being made available between 2013 and 2015.

This latest round of funding comes after 47 colleges received funds through the Enhanced Renewal Grant Three and two more through an initial round of CCIF.

Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills Vince Cable said:

?Vocational education and skills are an important part of rebalancing our economy. They not only help with widening participation, but also help to provide a workforce best equipped for the modern world.

?There is a longstanding backlog in college building and refitting. We are investing to address this. These colleges will be able to provide good teaching facilities in all parts of the country, helping us to build the skills base across the country.?

Skills Minister Matthew Hancock said:

?To grow British industry and compete in the global race we need our colleges to produce highly skilled engineers, designers, mechanics and builders.

?However nearly a million learners in this country have a substandard experience due to poor estates and facilities.

?To produce world class talent we must have the facilities to match so over the next two years we have are investing ?550 million in colleges. This will help to build the state of the art workshops and research centres to help young people reach their full potential.?

Examples of the 21 successful bids submitted to the Skills Funding Agency, which conducted the assessment and moderation process, include:

  • a ?3.25 million redevelopment of Cornwall College?s Falmouth campus, which will enhance their curriculum for marine engineering, marine biology and boatbuilding. The local LEP identified marine and renewable energy sectors as important and the college is responding, by providing skills that will contribute to the South West Marine Energy Park
  • construction of a ?5.1 million STEM project and research centre, which will focus on engineering and construction at East Berkshire College
  • a new centre for engineering, manufacturing and advanced skills technology with industry standard workshops for learners to use at Fareham College worth up to ?14 million
  • a ?3.06 million construction and motor vehicle centre at Myerscough College This will provide opportunities to extend skills in new technologies including hybrid and electric cars
  • West Nottinghamshire College will create a ?5.716 million Engineering Innovation Centre, which will support national infrastructure projects such as HS2 and the Nottingham Tram Phase 2 work. The Centre will deliver a range of engineering and technical skills, including transport technology and advanced manufacturing at all levels

Kim Thorneywork, Chief Executive of the Skills Funding Agency, said:

?I am delighted that through this second round of capital funding approvals 21 colleges will receive ?78 million to build and modernise their facilities, meaning that thousands of students will get the best possible learning experience.

?With a third round of funding planned for the Autumn, this really does demonstrate the Government?s continued commitment to the further education estate. The Agency will continue to work with colleges to make the skills system more rigorous and responsive to the needs of employers, and this ongoing funding will help us do that."

Martin Doel, Association of Colleges? (AoC) Chief Executive, said:

?We welcome this announcement, on behalf of the Colleges benefiting from this and previous rounds of capital investment. Improved buildings and facilities allow Colleges to better serve students, staff, businesses and the wider community.

?Colleges in these rounds have worked hard to leverage finance in support of capital projects, independent of public finance, which means that the projects offer extremely good value for each Treasury pound spent. The guarantee of future public support for College capital projects in the comprehensive spending review is therefore good news for Colleges, their students and the businesses that they support.?

As the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) confirms this investment it can also announce a third round of funding, which will be considered in the Autumn of this year.

Changes in the international economy mean the world is in a global race, in which the UK needs to be among the winners. The Government?s most important task is to build a stronger, more balanced economy capable of delivering lasting growth and widely shared prosperity, which is the aim of the industrial strategy. This investment will help to develop the skills needed for this strategy.

Businesses are already recognising that industrial strategy is beginning to make a difference, and the CBI, TUC and individual companies like GSK, GKN Plc and Expro all recognise that we need an industrial strategy.

Notes to editors

1. The 21 colleges that have been selected for receiving funding (subject to due diligence) can be found here: http://propertyservices.skillsfundingagency.bis.gov.uk/capitalfunding/

2. CCIF was confirmed in December 2012 through the Autumn Statement, the Skills Funding Statement and the College Capital Investment Strategy. Since the Autumn Statement more than ?180m has been allocated to FE colleges across England.

3. In December the Government published the new FE Capital Investment Strategy which set out the clear rationale for the creation of a ?550 million investment programme targeted at colleges:

  • 800,000 learners in England are currently learning in sub-standard buildings
  • Every ?1 million of capital expenditure increases participation by between approximately 62 and 86 learners per year
  • A ?5 million college refurbishment project could typically employ around 60 people and could increase to as much as 600 jobs for a ?20 million college relocation
  • Annual maintenance costs for the worst colleges are 34 per cent higher than the best.

4. The FE Capital Investment Strategy can be found at: http://www.bis.gov.uk/assets/biscore/further-education-skills/docs/F/12-1340-further-education-college-capital-investment-strategy-plan

5. The CCIF criteria, which are based upon priorities set by Ministers, were developed with input from college sector representatives. The approved projects were chosen in a robust assessment and moderation process, conducted by the Skills Funding Agency and supported and endorsed by the AoC

6. The Government's economic policy objective is to achieve 'strong, sustainable and balanced growth that is more evenly shared across the country and between industries.' It set four ambitions in the ?Plan for Growth? (PDF 1.7MB), published at Budget 2011:

  • To create the most competitive tax system in the G20
  • To make the UK the best place in Europe to start, finance and grow a business
  • To encourage investment and exports as a route to a more balanced economy
  • To create a more educated workforce that is the most flexible in Europe.

Work is underway across Government to achieve these ambitions, including progress on more than 250 measures as part of the Growth Review. Developing an Industrial Strategy gives new impetus to this work by providing businesses, investors and the public with more clarity about the long-term direction in which the Government wants the economy to travel.

Park stumbles to a 74 as bid for 4 straight fades

(AP) ? Inbee Park says her bid to become the first golfer to win four straight professional majors in the same season is now "almost impossible."

Even in good scoring conditions Sunday morning at St. Andrews, Park couldn't get a putt to fall. She wound up with a 2-over 74 in the wind-delayed third round of the Women's British Open and was 10 shots out of the lead.

The third round still was not over, though with only a breeze on the Old Course, it was unlikely the leaders were going to drop many shots. And there was an increasing number of players ahead of her on the leaderboard.

"I really think it's almost impossible to do," Park said about staging a big rally Sunday afternoon. "There's not many holes left to play now. This golf course, it is playing tough for me. The greens are getting firmer. It's tough to hit the ball close to the pin. You have to hole long putts here, but it doesn't seem to be going in."

Nothing summed up her round like the 18th hole.

The 25-year-old South Korean had a 10-foot birdie putt that looked good all the way until it dipped around the left side of the cup. Park shook her head, and after tapping in for par, continued shaking her head as she walked over to her caddie.

On Saturday, Park was 1-under through four holes when the third round was suspended by 40 mph gusts that moved balls on the greens. Sunday morning presented a better chance to score. It was calm when the round resumed. A 43-person maintenance staff used mowers on the green, but the blades were raised so that only the dew was removed. The greens were not cut in case of more high wind.

She made bogey on No. 6 and dropped two more shots coming back, while leaving several putts short.

"Today nothing wanted to drop," Park said. "I didn't strike the ball bad at all today. It was good conditions for scoring, and I didn't really take advantage. You get days like that. It's OK. You can't play good every day."

And even if she doesn't win the Women's British Open, she still has three majors she can cherish this year ? the Kraft Nabisco Championship in April, followed by the LPGA Championship and the U.S. Women's Open.

Since the modern version of the Grand Slam began in 1960 ? Bobby Jones won two professional and two amateur majors in 1930 ? Park was the only player to win the first three majors of a season. The only other pro to do that was Babe Zaharias in 1950, when the LPGA Tour only had three majors.

Ben Hogan won three majors in 1953, though the British Open at Carnoustie was held one week after the PGA Championship. Hogan couldn't play the PGA Championship, physically because of his battered legs and logistically because Open qualifying was the same week as the PGA.

Tiger Woods won the final three majors of 2000 after tying for fifth in the Masters.

Woods, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Annika Sorenstam each got halfway to the Grand Slam and couldn't get the third leg.

Jack White fires back at ex-wife in court docs

Jack White.

Former White Stripes singer Jack White has provided an answer in court to his former wife Karen Elson, who had a restraining order issued against him last week and has petitioned that he submit to a psychiatric exam.

Rolling Stone obtained court documents from Davidson County Circuit Court in Nashville in which White objects to being characterized as an unfit father to their two children. In the countermotion, his lawyer Cathy Speers Johnson writes, "The reason for filing this response is that Mr. White does not want to be portrayed as something he is not, violent toward his wife and children."

The note also refers to emails the pair sent one another, including one dated May 19, 2013, where she calls him an "amazing father." The motion for a psychiatric exam is described as "inflammatory . . . . disingenuous, fraudulent and retaliatory and simply designed to malign him in the public record or to gain an upper hand in this litigation."

He said he did not oppose the restraining order, but objected to limited communication with his children.

White noted that Elson left the children in his care after signing the restraining order affidavit and then went on a "work/pleasure trip" in New York. "One who was truly fearful of another would not leave their children alone with that person for 10 days," the response noted. "The truth of the matter is that Ms. Elson is not fearful for herself or the parties' minor children."

In Elson's filing, she had referred to a musician White had particular enmity toward ? going so far as to wanting to have his child removed from a class where that musician's child was also taking part ? and White's countermotion revealed that the singer in question was The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach.?

In one email, writes? The Hollywood Reporter, White called Aeurbach a "derogatory name" and said he didn't want to spend the next 12 years of their children's schooling "with people trying to lump us together."

White's spokesperson told THR that he would only comment in court filings on the case, and Auerbach's spokesperson said he had no comment. Auerbach?is also going through a divorce, as announced in February.

Web Design Brookfield, WI - Wordpress Explained | Waukesha Web ...

If you have gone through our website a bit, you?ve probably noticed that we talk about WordPress a lot! It?s hard to fully explain the benefits of WordPress without showing someone first hand how amazing it really is, but we?ll do our best to explain it here in more detail to see if it?s a good fit for you.

WprdPress Explained by Lowcows Web Design Brookfield,WI

WordPress Explained: by Lowcows Web Design Brookfield,WI

WordPress and content management systems (CMS) like it are truely the future of web design. We personally use WordPress for our own site and suggest it to every Waukesha, Milwaukee, and Brookfield, WI Web Design client that walks through our door. Providing businesses with a way to update and manage their website is by far the most valuable marketing tool that money can buy these days.

What is a content management sysem (CMS)?

Content managament systems provide a way to easily manage text, images, and pages on a website at their core, yet work very similarly to smart phones in regards to apps, which I?ll explain later. Somewhere in between, companies like Lowcows are able to create website designs and tools that seamlessly integrate into WordPress allowing us to build sites with incredible functionality at a fraction of what it would have cost just five years ago.

The design

WordPress uses ?Themes? for the website?s actual design. There are thousands of free and premium themes out there that look great to begin with, and can also be customized to more closely fit a company?s brand. The other option is to custom design a theme specifically for a company. It?s hard to use the word ?theme? without it sounding like a generic template site, but they couldn?t be any more different. WordPress is what makes these websites so powerful and the design is a reflection of who we are as businesses. Everything about a WordPress Theme is designed to be modified to reflect the individual or business.

Plugins

Plugins for WordPress are very similar to apps for a smart phone. Different plugins can be installed on a WordPress site to perform various tasks. Example?s of plugins are photo galleries, social sharing buttons, email list signup forms, interactive maps, image sliders, polls and calendars just to begin with. There are literally thousands of plucins available for free. There are also thousands of great paid plugins as well that cost pennies on the dollar compared to hand coding the same feature. Having tools like these that are ready to be installed on a website saves business owners thousands compared to just five years ago. What we can complete in weeks these days would have taken us 6 months not that long ago. It?s truly a win, win for everyone!

Functionality

WordPress makes it very easy to manage your websites content. Once we train you to work with WordPress, it?s about as difficult as sending an email to update your pages. Just a few minutes a day will allow you to communicate with your clients like never before. We often preach that you need to give people a reason to come back to your website to our clients. We blog about different resources available to businesses online for the same reason a restaurant would post their specials, or a shoe store would advertise a sale. People need a reason to come back to a website, and WordPress makes it a practical to do so without costing a lot of time or money.

Compared to large corporate websites, we?re able to duplicate 95% of what you see on those sites at a fraction of the cost, and without needing special software or a full time IT person. WordPress currently has just shy of 70 million people using their CMS to manage their website. It?s literally changing the Internet right before our eyes.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about WordPress. If you?re looking for web design in Brookfield, WI, Milwaukee, or? Waukesha, please feel free to give us a call. We?d love to give you a personal, no pressure tour of WordPress!

Renewed protests keep Libya oil exports below half of normal

LONDON (Reuters) - Libya's oil exports were flowing at less than half of normal rates on Friday as strikes and protests kept major terminals shut in one of the worst disruptions to hit the North African OPEC producer in the past year.

A new wave of unrest that began on Sunday forced the closure of the Es Sider and Ras Lanuf terminals in eastern Libya, cutting exports to about 425,000 barrels per day (bpd) from previous levels of more than 1 million, industry sources said.

The latest stoppages have featured security guards seeking more pay while protests that have also involved demands by local people for more oil sector jobs had already closed the Zueitina terminal in early July.

Oil industry sources said the three terminals remained closed.

A senior Libyan official had said late on Thursday that he expected output to resume very soon.

"We have communication now with people there to resume the production," Mustafa Sanalla, a board member of Libya's state National Oil Corporation, said at a conference in Washington, D.C.

The protests and strikes cut output last month to 1.15 million bpd versus 1.3 million bpd the previous month, according to a Reuters survey.

Before the unrest, Libya's production had nearly recovered to the rates of 1.6 million bpd seen before the conflict that led to the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Ras Lanuf and Es Sider together are able to handle about 600,000 bpd. Zueitina had been exporting up to 70,000 bpd.

Ras Lanuf is a large complex that includes the country's biggest refinery, also affected by the strikes, and a separate port. Es Sider exports the main Es Sider crude oil grade pumped by the Waha consortium, which has a capacity of around 350,000 bpd.

Libya's Deputy Oil Minister Omar Shakmak said on Thursday that the government should not give in to the protesters. "If this is accepted, it is possible then maybe some others will do the same thing," Shakmak said in Washington.

The disruptions to Libya's oil sector risk crippling its economic lifeline and choking off state revenues.

The El-Feel oilfield, with production capacity of 130,000 bpd, has been shut down for several weeks. The field is operated by Mellitah - a joint venture between Libya's state energy firm and Italy's Eni.

$300 million in play: Powerball lottery numbers picked

By Gil Aegerter, Staff Writer, NBC News

The Powerball lottery jackpot jumped to $400 million after nobody won in Saturday night's drawing. The numbers drawn Saturday were?21-24-36-42-45 with Powerball 15.

There were no winners of the big prize, and the jackpot for the next drawing is now estimated at $400 million, Powerball officials said.?That would be worth more than $230 million before taxes if taken as a lump sum, Powerball said.

Tickets worth $2 million each were sold in Florida and Texas for Saturday's drawing, and $1 million tickets were sold in five states.

The pot had reached $300 million, bringing out lots of ticket buyers aiming to strike it rich.

?We?ve got the winning ticket, right here,? one man buying a ticket at a San Diego-area store told NBCSanDiego.com before the drawing. ?It?s going to help a lot of people.?

Or not.?

While $400 million is a lot, it?s not close to a lottery record. The largest prize ever was $656 million won in the Mega Millions contest on March 30, 2012. The biggest Powerball jackpot was $590.5 million, won in Florida in May by an 84-year-old widow.

9 Afghans killed in attack on Indian consulate

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Three suicide attackers killed at least nine civilians, most of them children, in a botched attack Saturday on the Indian consulate in an eastern Afghan city near the border with Pakistan, security officials said.

Police fired on the militants as they approached a checkpoint near the consulate in Jalalabad, prompting one of them to set off their explosives-laden car, said Masum Khan Hashimi, the deputy police chief of Nangarhar province. The blast killed nine bystanders, and wounded another 24 people including a policeman.

All three attackers also died, although it was not clear how many were killed by police fire and how many by the explosion.

In New Delhi, India's External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin says that all Indian officials in the consulate were safe.

Afghanistan's main insurgent group, the Taliban, denied in a text message that it had carried out the attack. Smaller militant groups based in Pakistan have targeted Indian interests in Afghanistan in the past.

Hashimi said the attack began when three men in a car approached the checkpoint. Two of the men got out of the car wearing vests rigged with explosives and a police guard immediately opened fire on them, Hashimi said. He added that the third man then detonated a large bomb located inside the car.

In 2010, two Kabul guest houses popular among Indians were attacked, killing more than six Indians. India blamed that attack on the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The Indian Embassy was bombed in 2008 and 2009, leaving 75 people dead.

The attack came as the U.S. planned to close its embassies in the Muslim world for the weekend due to an al-Qaida threat.

Move over Bordeaux: French premium winemakers eye China vintage

BEIJING | Fri Aug 2, 2013 2:40am IST

BEIJING (Reuters) - In a few remote corners of China, two of France's top winemakers have more on their minds than a trade row with their most promising export market.

In three far-flung provinces, a world away from Beijing's allegations of European wine dumping, makers of such lofty French brands as Chateau Lafite-Rothschild and Dom Perignon champagne are investing millions of dollars to produce vintages they hope will put Chinese wine on the world map.

In a country where cheap plonk and overpriced mediocre wines still define the domestic industry, the French are partnering with Chinese investors to produce super-premium wines for increasingly discerning drinkers at the market's top end.

They will likely charge hundreds of dollars per bottle when the wines start appearing in a year or two, turning out deeply rich reds and elegantly sparkling wines for wealthy Chinese drinkers who they hope will be proud to serve local vintages that are the equal of their imported collections.

"China deserves the production of great wines," said Christophe Salin, president of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (DBR), which owns the vaunted Chateau Lafite, Ch. Duhart-Milon and Ch. L'Evangile, among other French labels. "Without wanting to copy Lafite, we wish to produce a great wine on Chinese soil," he added in an interview.

"SHANGRI-LA"

DBR is investing 100 million yuan with partner CITIC, a state investment firm, to develop 25 hectares (62 acres) of vineyards in eastern Shandong province to produce super-premium red wine for the Chinese market.

Moet-Hennessy, the wine and spirits arm of luxury group LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA (LVMH.PA), is also looking to make a top-end Chinese red and is planting 30 hectares (74 acres) of grapes in remote mountains of southern Yunnan province.

Moet-Hennessy studied climate and soil conditions at hundreds of locations around China before settling on an area the government calls "Shangri-La", abutting Tibet, to grow Cabernet sauvignon, Cabernet franc and Merlot grapes.

Moet-Hennessy CEO Christophe Navarre won't divulge the investment there but says it is borne two-thirds by Moet-Hennessy and one-third by its Chinese partner, winemaker VATS.

"I dream one day to go back to France with a bottle of red wine produced in the region of Shangri-La and I can say it's the best wine in the world," Navarre said in announcing the venture last year.

Moet-Hennessy's wine portfolio includes the vaunted Ch. Cheval Blanc and Ch. d'Yquem, the world's most coveted dessert wine. Its champagnes include Dom Perignon, Moet & Chandon and Krug - and it is developing vineyards in Ningxia Hui autonomous region in north-central China with a view to producing China's first ultra-premium sparkling wine.

Neither DBR nor Moet-Hennessy plans to market its Chinese wines under existing brands. Both say they want to give the wines a unique Chinese identity - a strategy that is questioned by some within the Chinese wine industry.

"If they don't put their brand on it then people won't buy it at a very high price," says Monica He, who works with wine importer Menvis in Beijing.

GROWING THIRST

DBR's and LVMH's investments into China aim to capitalise on China's growing thirst for premium wines, but could also help their extensive line-ups of mid-priced wines and spirits.

Chinese consumers are drawn to either high-end or cheap wine, leaving a gap in the middle of the market. By producing a Chinese "halo" wine marque, the French winemakers could draw drinkers to their imported mid-range lineup.

The French investors do not have plans to produce still white wines in China, as red wine and champagne are more fashionable for upwardly mobile Chinese wine drinkers.

China is the world's fifth-largest wine consumer, according to a study last year for VINEXPO, an annual wine trade show that alternates between Bordeaux and Hong Kong. The study forecast annual consumption growth in China and Hong Kong at 54.3 percent between 2011 and 2015, or a billion more bottles every year.

China's wine market is dominated by a few large local producers that make bulk and mid-priced wine, and some premium-priced wines selling for more than $100 a bottle, but these are usually considered far inferior to much cheaper imported wines.

So can China produce something at the highest level?

"The potential there is to make something very, very good," says Jim Boyce, who follows China's wine industry on his blog Grapewallofchina. "There are a lot of people who've been telling me for years that Yunnan is where it's going to happen."

Meanwhile, Beijing and Brussels are in talks to end their trade dispute over wine, with a settlement seen as likely after the two sides struck a deal last week in a separate row over Chinese solar panel exports to Europe. [ID:nL6N0FX04U] Beijing had launched its investigation into European wine sales after the European Union moved to impose steep import duties on Chinese solar panels. Stephen Harper says pipelines ?safest way you can go? when transporting oil

OTTAWA ? Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Friday that while he thinks new pipeline projects are a good idea in principle, individual proposals will undergo ?rigorous? review.

Why Canada can, and must, pull off nation-building Energy East pipeline

Claudia Cattaneo: TransCanada?s $12-billion pipeline would truly make the country oil rich, while ensuring the best environmental protection that can be had. Keep reading.

?I think the reality of anybody who looks at the business (is) that the absolute safest way to transport energy products is through pipelines. That?s the safest way you can go,? the prime minister told a news conference in Quebec City. He was responding to concerns about a new east-west pipeline proposal announced earlier this week.

The prime minister said he thinks such pipeline projects are a good idea in principle, because they benefit regions across Canada and enhance the country?s energy security. But he said they are subject to ?rigorous independent analysis.?

?In terms of addressing specific concerns, there is a process that will do that, and the government will ensure that all recommendations from that process are followed,? he said.

Harper?s remarks came a day after Calgary-based TransCanada said it plans to move ahead with its Energy East pipeline project. The project will expand an existing pipeline network to enter Quebec and end in New Brunswick.

The comments also come at a time of heightened sensitivity about the transportation of crude oil after the Lac-Megantic disaster, in which an unmanned runaway train carrying crude oil exploded and devastated the eastern Quebec town.

For new energy projects, Harper said the government acts on the independent evaluations that look at environmental and economic effects, ?particularly on independent scientific evaluations.?

?But obviously we think it is a good idea in principle in terms of selling our energy products,? he said. ?We have massive energy resources in this country. ? It?s important that Canadians all across the country benefit, and it?s important that we enhance our own energy security.?

Harper was also asked to respond to criticisms of the contentious proposed Keystone XL pipeline?s job creation potential.

Earlier this week, U.S. President Barack Obama again waded into the heated Keystone debate, saying the proposed pipeline that would carry crude oil from Canada?s oil sands to the U.S. Gulf Coast is ?not a jobs plan? and would only create about 2,000 construction jobs.

On Friday, Harper responded by saying his government?s top priority is job creation, and its perspective on Keystone is ?very well known by everyone in Washington.?

?Clearly this is a project that will create jobs on both sides of the border,? Harper said. ?It is, in our judgment, an important project not just for our economy and for job creation, but for the long-term energy security of North America.?

TransCanada?s east-west pipeline proposal, which would move more than a million barrels of crude oil per day to refineries in New Brunswick, has the enthusiastic support of the premiers of Alberta Premier Alison Redford and New Brunswick Premier David Alward.

?This is truly a nation-building project that will diversify our economy and create new jobs here in Alberta and across the country,? Redford said in a statement on Thursday. Alward called the project a ?game changer.?

But Quebec Premier Pauline Marois has been non-committal. She said last week her province would study the proposal when TransCanada releases more details.

The project also still needs to clear numerous regulatory hurdles, with TransCanada?s announcement Thursday meaning the company is pushing ahead with formal applications for approval.

Harper was in Quebec City with Heritage Minister Shelly Glover, new Quebec lieutenant Denis Lebel and Quebec City Mayor R?gis Labeaume to announce that the city?s Gilmour Hill, near the Plains of Abraham, will now be open to traffic year-round instead of closing for the winter months.

Summer reading and the beauty of serendipity

Oh, the magic of finding a great book through the sheer power of chance! Is the summer the best time for that to happen? ?

By Danny Heitman,?Contributor / August 2, 2013

Monitor book blogger Danny Heitman doesn't often read mystery novels. But this summer he decided to try Alan Bradley?s latest Flavia de Luce novel, ?Speaking From Among the Bones.?

Well-meaning arbiters of literary taste ? including, of course, the folks at ?Chapter & Verse? ? offer lots of well-meaning suggestions and reading lists to help connect book lovers with just the right title.

Nothing wrong with any of that, of course. The next best thing to reading a book, after all, is discussing it and ? when it?s a good one ? recommending a page-turner to others.

But today I?d like to offer a few words in praise of serendipity in summer reading ? the magic of finding a great book not because someone pointed you toward it, but through the sheer power of chance.

All of this came to mind recently when I bumped into a book by Robert James Waller and startled myself by liking it. Waller is best known as the author of ?The Bridges of Madison County,? a wildly popular novel about a pair of lovers in a star-crossed romance. Hats off to Waller for penning such a whopping bestseller, but I never opened the covers of ?Madison County? for myself.

The premise of his novel always struck me as firmly in the genre of chick-lit, so I made a point of steering clear. And thanks to Waller?s signature novel, I?d mentally filed him as a?woman?s writer, assured that I could skip all of his books without regret.

But the other day, while visiting my local library, I spotted the spine of Waller?s ?Old Songs In A New Caf?? from the corner of my eye and decided to pick it up. That?s how I learned of Waller?s previous life as a newspaper essayist before he became a publishing sensation.

?Old Songs In A New Caf?? assembles about two dozen of his vintage columns, mostly from ?The Des Moines Register,? and they?re a pleasure from start to finish, bringing Waller?s poetic sensibility to bear on everything from the death of a treasured pet to the departure of a daughter for college.

The happy accident that brought Waller?s work to my attention made me think of the many other times when helpful quirks of fate landed the perfect book in my lap. As a high schooler killing time at a neighborhood rummage sale, I leaned on a table and found my hand resting on a copy of H.L. Mencken?s ?Minority Report,? discounted for a quarter. I?d never heard of Mencken, the gadfly journalist who had his heyday in the 1920s, but through this castoff title, I became a big fan, eventually filling two bookshelves with his work. The joy that Mencken took in the English language encouraged me to pursue writing as a profession.

During a college internship in Washington, D.C., I was leaving a bookstore at the Smithsonian when a shock of green grabbed my attention. It was the cover of Henry David Thoreau?s ?Walden,? which I bought on a whim, not expecting very much in return. Thoreau?s thoughts on simplicity and the power of local landscape stay with me still. I sometimes wonder how things might have turned out if that book jacket hadn?t been so striking.

Can we encourage these kinds of lucky literary meetings? The nature of luck, after all, is that you can?t really plan it.

But there are things that readers can do to become more open to the playful spin of the reading roulette wheel.

The time-honored art of browsing in a bookstore or library is a good way to indulge random acts of discovery. It?s nice to remind ourselves that we readers often don?t know what we?ll like until we try it.

This summer, I?m also nudging myself out of my usual reading habits. Although I can count on one hand the mystery novels I?ve read, I recently decided, just for kicks, to try Alan Bradley?s latest Flavia de Luce novel, ?Speaking From Among the Bones.? Who knows? Maybe Bradley?s prose could please me as much as Mencken?s, Thoreau?s, or Waller?s.??

We all read for the promise of surprise. But sometimes, as readers, we have to put out the welcome mat for chance.

Summer, perhaps more than any other season, is the time to do just that.

Oil marches past $108 on favorable economic data

BANGKOK (AP) ? Oil prices breezed past $108 per barrel Friday, with traders emboldened by record highs on Wall Street and data showing an upswing in U.S. factory output.

Benchmark crude for September delivery rose 67 cents to $108.56 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $2.86 a barrel Thursday, or 2.7 percent, to close at $107.89 a barrel on the Nymex on Thursday.

Oil prices are being fueled by the same optimism that pushed Wall Street to new highs Thursday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index and the Dow Jones industrial average both set record highs, and the S&P 500 crossed the 1,700 mark for the first time.

The Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing managers, said its index of U.S. manufacturing jumped to 55.4 in July, up from 50.9 in June and well above an expected reading of 51.8. A number above 50 indicates growth.

On Friday, hiring figures for July will be released, then examined for hints about future energy demand in the world's No. 1 economy.

In a commentary, Michael Hewson of CMC Markets said that report "could well add the final flourish to a record week, and a perfect start to August."

Brent crude, traded on the ICE Futures exchange in London, rose 50 cents to $110.04 per barrel.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

? Heating oil was up 0.9 cents to $3.1055 a gallon.

? Natural gas fell 3 cents to $3.362 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Wholesale gasoline rose 0.2 cents to $3.0305 a gallon.

Florida declares two butterfly species extinct as pollinator crisis worsens

By: Alexander Holmgren
August 01, 2013

Conservationist?s faced a crushing blow last month as two butterfly species native to Florida were declared extinct.

"Occasionally, these types of butterflies disappear for long periods of time but are rediscovered in another location," said Larry Williams, U.S. Fish and Wildlife state supervisor for ecological services. We think it?s apparent now these two species are extinct."

Neither species has been seen in any environment for at least nine years, the latter of the two not being seen since 2000. This calamity is only made worse by the fact that so much could have been done in order to save these creatures. The first species, the Zestos skipper butterfly (Epargyreus zestos oberon), had strong bodies with large black eyes and large wings that were adorned with spots that looked like eyes. While the Zestos skipper was visibly declining in its environment, the subspecies was denied access to the U.S.?s Endangered Species Act (ESA) because of the confusion between it and other skipper species in the Bahamas. In the end, what was thought to be a bountiful reserve in the Bahamas proved to be a completely different species. By the time the mistake was realized it proved too late.

The Rockland grass skipper butterfly (Hesperia meskei pinocayo), an amber golden insect with club like antenna and black eyes, was similarly thought to be making a comeback as the species that had not been seen since the 80?s was spotted back in 2000. But is now believed extinct.

A skipper butterfly. Photo by Muhammad Mahdi Karim and reproduced under the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2.

The extinction of these animals "serves as a wake-up call that we really need to intensify our efforts to save other imperiled butterflies," according to Williams.

Both species vanished almost overnight as conservationists and scientists realized that the abundant populations of these species simply did not exist.

The extinction of these species may have far-reaching environmental repercussion. One of the most important ecological services performed by butterflies is pollination Ninety percent of plants on our planet require pollinators in order to reproduce, and butterflies are a key part of this process for many plants. While not regularly known as keystone pollinators, butterflies are actually capable of dispersing pollen farther than honeybees since they don?t have to return to a hive with the pollen they have collected.

Butterflies also serve as crucial indicator species. Because of their short life cycles and close reliance on the climate, butterflies are excellent indicators of environmental stress. The extinction of both these species in such a short span is a clear sign of degradation. Researchers believe that habitat loss likely played a key role in these species? loss. In addition, extreme weather events such as hurricanes or droughts--while before would only help to regulate the population--may now directly cause extinction in much reduced population numbers.

The extinction of the Zestos skipper and the rockland grass skipper marks a new contribution towards the ever-worsening pollinator crisis. The same factors that led to their extinction, such as a growing human population and a dwindling natural habitat for animals, is only exacerbated with every year.

Bloomberg's ban on big sodas is unconstitutional: appeals court

By Joseph Ax

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's controversial plan to keep large sugary drinks out of restaurants and other eateries was rejected by a state appeals court on Tuesday, which said he had overstepped his authority in trying to impose the ban.

The law, which would have prohibited those businesses from selling sodas and other sugary beverages larger than 16 ounces (473 ml), "violated the state principle of separation of powers," the First Department of the state Supreme Court's Appellate Division said.

The decision, upholding a lower court ruling in March that struck down the law, dealt a blow to Bloomberg's attempt to advance the pioneering regulation as a way to combat obesity. Beverage makers and business groups, however, challenged it in court, arguing that the mayoral-appointed health board had gone too far when it approved the law.

A unanimous four-judge panel at the appeals court agreed, finding that the board had stepped beyond its power to regulate public health and usurped the policy-making role of the legislature.

In particular, the court focused on the law's loopholes, which exempted businesses not under the auspices of the city's health department and left certain drinks, such as milk-based beverages, unaffected.

As a result, grocery and convenience stores - such as 7 Eleven and its 64-ounce Big Gulp - were protected from the ban's reach, even as restaurants, sandwich shops and movie theaters were not. Meanwhile, milkshakes and high-calorie coffee drinks like Starbucks' Frappucinos would have remained unfettered.

"The exceptions did not ... reflect the agency's charge to protect public health but instead reflected the agency's own policy decisions regarding balancing the relative importance of protecting public health with ensuring the economic viability of certain industries," Justice Dianne Renwick wrote for the court.

In a statement, Bloomberg said the decision was a "temporary setback" and vowed to appeal to the state's highest court, the Court of Appeals. If the court declines to hear the city's appeal, the case would come to an end.

Bloomberg also said that more than 2,000 New Yorkers had died from diabetes since March 12, when the law was struck down just one day before it was to take effect.

The proposed ban, the first of its kind, drew national attention, as public health advocates praised the plan while critics decried Bloomberg for trying to create a "nanny state."

A spokesman for the American Beverage Association, an industry group that served as the lead plaintiff in challenging the law, said, "With this ruling behind us, we look forward to collaborating with city leaders on solutions that will have a meaningful and lasting impact on the people of New York City."

VICTORY FOR DRINK MAKERS

During his three terms, Bloomberg has made public health a signature issue, prohibiting smoking in restaurants, bars and parks; banning trans fats; and requiring chain restaurants to post calorie counts.

He is set to leave office at year's end, and it remains unclear whether his successor will take up the sugary soda issue. City Council President Christine Quinn, a leading Democratic candidate, opposed the ban, while Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, another Democratic candidate, said he supports the law.

Other Democratic candidates, including William Thompson Jr and Anthony Weiner, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In its decision, the appeals court emphasized that it was not expressing an opinion on the "wisdom" of regulations curtailing large sodas, "provided that they are enacted by the government body with the authority to do so."

Asked whether Bloomberg might now seek to pass legislation through the City Council, a mayoral spokeswoman said, "The route that we have gone is through the Board of Health."

The ruling is a victory for companies like Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Dr Pepper Snapple, which argued that the law would do little to address obesity while imposing unnecessary costs. The restaurant industry and several business groups also had filed papers in support of the lawsuit.

State Supreme Court Justice Milton Tingling struck down the law in March. At the time, Bloomberg said the ruling was "totally in error" and expressed confidence that the city would prevail on appeal.
