NEW YORK (AP) ? Clemson and Kansas State tumbled in The Associated Press college football poll after losing for the first time this season, and the top five teams in the rankings held their ground heading into the showdown between No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama.

Clemson slipped five spots after losing 31-17 at Georgia Tech and Kansas fell seven spots to No. 17 after getting thumped 58-17 by Oklahoma.

LSU received 47 first-place votes from the media panel, Alabama had 10 and No. 5 Boise State had one.

No. 3 Oklahoma State and No. 4 Stanford held on to their spots after victories, while the Broncos were idle.

Georgia Tech's upset pushed the Yellow Jackets back into the rankings at No. 22 and Auburn jumped back in at No. 25.

The losses by Clemson and Kansas State leave six undefeated teams in major college football ? the top five and No. 14 Houston.

The rest of the top had Oregon at No. 6, Oklahoma moving up four spots to No. 7, Arkansas at No. 8 and Nebraska and South Carolina right behind.

Clemson at 11th was followed by Atlantic Coast Conference rival Virginia Tech.

Michigan is No. 13, its best ranking since Nov. 4, 2007.

Michigan State is No. 15, followed By Penn State, Kansas State, Georgia, Wisconsin and Arizona State.

The final five were Southern California, Georgia Tech, Cincinnati, West Virginia and Auburn.

The defending national champion Tigers have fallen out of the rankings three times this season, only to work their way back in.

Falling out after losses were two Big 12 teams.

Texas A&M (5-3) was upset at home 38-31 in overtime by Missouri and is unranked for the first time this season.

Texas Tech moved into the rankings last week for the first time this season by beating Oklahoma. The Red Raiders followed that up with a 41-7 loss at home to Iowa State and are unranked again.

Even Debt Collectors Are Struggling In This Economy

You won?t likely shed any tears over this: Being a debt collector is harder than ever.

While most Americans want to get out of debt using a debt management plan or debt consolidation, many can?t afford the payments right now. This complicates the debt collection process.

Debt collectors aren?t dealing with deadbeats ducking obligations?they?re trying to get blood from a stone at a time of record debt.

Debt Collection Agencies in Hard Times

Originally reported by the Associated Press, debt collectors have more work than ever. They also have fewer opportunities to actually collect.

Some firms are satisfied with a debt management plan including payments as low as $5 or $10 per month. While this might allow the collection agency to report payments, it does little to help Americans get out of debt.

Further, Americans are less capable than ever of getting out of debt. With unemployment high and salaries low, the old ?I don?t have the money? line isn?t an excuse?it?s a hard reality for millions of Americans.

Debt consolidation and a debt management plan won?t do any good if the debtor simply doesn?t have any spare cash. For the growing debt collection industry, this is a case of ?water, water everywhere / but not a drop to drink.?

More Complaints About the Debt Collection Process

In addition to a harder collection environment, the debt collection process itself is under attack. The Federal Trade Commission gets more complaints about debt collectors than any other industry.
In tough economic times, debt collectors, who work on commission, are forced to engage in more and more desperate means to collect outstanding debt.

Changes in the Debt Collection Process

According to the AP article, some decades ago debt collectors averaged 30 percent recovery on outstanding debt. Now the number hovers closer to 20.

Perhaps most striking is the change in types of debt collected. In times past, debt collectors called either from the original debtor or from a single third-party collection agency. Now there?s a booming industry dedicated to acquiring debt third- or fourth-hand for pennies on the dollar, often after the customer?s legal obligation to repay the debt has long since lapsed.

Common Consumer Complaints Against Debt Collectors

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act outlines rights for consumers trying to get out of debt. The law forbids a number of unfair and harassing practices by aggressive debt collectors, but three are particularly heinous:

  • Not information a debtor of his rights in writing.
  • Calling repeatedly.
  • Providing false information regarding the debt.

Debtors can turn the tables on creditors, collecting $1,000 for every infraction of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Still, with debt collection a lucrative business, many third-party collection agencies can afford to play fast and loose with the law. Especially when times are hard and so is collection, the market might actually incentivize some of the worst practices of debt collection.

How to Handle Debt Collector Calls

Anyone being harassed by abusive debt collectors should begin all conversations with ?This call is being recorded,? record the call, take notes and report the infractions to the Federal Trade Commission. Every time debt collectors violate collection law, you owe them $1,000 less.

U.S. flying drones out of Ethiopia: paper (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The U.S. Air Force has been secretly flying drones from a civilian airport in southern Ethiopia as part of an aggressive campaign against al Qaeda affiliates in Somalia and Yemen, the Washington Post reported on Sunday.

The paper said in its online edition that Washington has invested millions of dollars to upgrade a remote airfield in Arba Minch from where it was now flying a fleet of Reaper drones that can carry Hellfire missiles and satellite-guided bombs.

It quoted the Pentagon as saying the drones had been unarmed and had been used for surveillance and collecting intelligence only but that it would not rule out using them to launch lethal strikes in the future.

No one at the Pentagon was immediately available to comment.

The Ethiopian government denied the presence of any foreign military bases, the paper said, but added that U.S. military personnel and contractors had become increasingly visible in Arba Minch, a small city of 70,000 people.

Reapers, known as "hunter-killer" drones, have a range of about 1,115 miles and Arba Minch is about 300 miles south of the capital Addis Ababa.

Last month, the Washington Post reported that the United States was building a ring of secret drone bases in the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. But it was not known where the Ethiopian base was or that it had become operational this year.

Kenya to stay in Somalia until 'threat' is gone (AP)

NAIROBI, Kenya ? Kenyan troops will stay in southern Somalia until Kenyans feel safe again, the chief of Kenya's armed forces said Saturday, raising questions about whether Kenya risks becoming bogged down in an open-ended occupation of its war-ravaged neighbor.

That problem eventually forced both U.N. and Ethiopian forces to withdraw from Somalia, though Gen. Julius Karangi told reporters that Kenya does not have a timeframe for leaving. Kenyan sent troops into Somalia earlier this month to fight al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab militants.

"When the Kenya government and the people of this country feel that they are safe enough from the al-Shabab menace, we shall pull back," Karangi said. "Key success factors or indicators will be in the form of a highly degraded al-Shabab capacity."

But Karangi says Kenya has no interest in permanently occupying Somalia and is working alongside the weak U.N.-backed Somali government, which only holds the capital with the help of 9,000 African Union soldiers. The Somali president has criticized the Kenyan intervention but Kenyan officials said they expected "clarification" from a high-level Somali delegation on Monday.

Kenya sent troops into Somalia following a string of cross-border attacks and kidnappings blamed on Somali gunmen. Kenya also hosts around 600,000 Somali refugees who have fled the fighting and famine in their homeland. The government is deeply worried about the rapidly swelling refugee camps in the north, which it considers a severe security problem.

So far Kenya has suffered one fatality due to al-Shabab fire, Karangi said, although five people were killed when their helicopter crashed. He said hundreds of al-Shabab were believed to be killed although he had no way of confirming that directly.

Karangi says that although Kenya has bilateral military agreements with countries like the United States and Britain, those allies are not directly militarily involved in the incursion into Somalia.

"There has been a lot of talk about other friends of ours participating militarily in what we are engaged in, and the answer is no," he said. "I think the American ambassador yesterday made it very clear ... that they are not militarily involved in the campaign with us."

AU troops have been in Somalia since 2007 and now control almost all the capital. But they still suffer almost daily attacks. Several gunmen tried to storm one of their bases in the capital on Saturday, a spokesman said.

The gunmen were stopped by AU troops when they tried to enter the base, said Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda. A reporter for The Associated Press near the scene said the gunfight was still going on as he spoke with Ankunda and that casualties were unclear.

Resident Mohammed Abdi says he heard several large explosions near the base but it was not clear what caused them.

Somalia has not had a functioning government since warlords overthrew a socialist dictator in 1991.

Progeria: Promising results from new gene therapy on animals

ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2011) ? Huge progress has been made over the last few years in scientific research into progeria, a disease that leads to premature aging in children. In 2003, a team directed by Nicolas L?vy discovered the gene, and, in 2008, 12 children were able to begin clinical trials in which two molecules were combined to slow down the characteristic effects of the disease: premature aging. Researchers are continuing their efforts in an attempt to counter the consequences of the genetic defect that causes progeria.

Until now, no model had been able to accurately imitate the effects of the disease in humans. For several years, research has been conducted in close collaboration from teams led by Nicolas L?vy and Annachiara De Sandre-Giovannoli at Inserm/Universit? de la M?diterran?e and from a team led by Carlos L?pez-Ot?n (University of Oviedo) and has succeeded in making such a model possible. The lifespan of mice treated through gene therapy is significantly extended and several other parameters related to them are improved. The research, published Oct. 26, 2011 in Science Translational Medicine, received backing from the AFM thanks to donations from a Telethon.

Progeria is a rare genetic disease. Children suffering from it seem to experience accelerated aging (chronic hair loss, joint pains, thin and hairless skin, cardiovascular problems). In 2003, Nicolas L?vy and his team identified the cause of the disease when they discovered the involvement of the LMNA (nuclear protein-coding) gene, lamin A/C. The mutation causes the production of a truncated protein, progerin, which accumulates in the nuclei of cells and its toxic effects cause their deformation and various other malfunctions. It has since been proven that progerin progressively accumulates in normal cells, thus establishing a link between the disease and physiological aging.

In 2008, European clinical trials began on twelve children suffering from progeria. The treatment is based on a combination of two existing molecules: statins (prescribed in the treatment and prevention of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risks) and aminobisphosphonates (prescribed in to treat osteoporosis and to prevent complications in some forms of cancer). The use of both these molecules aims to chemically alter progerin to reduce its toxicity. However, although this treatment aimed to slow down the development of the disease, it did not reduce the quantities of progerin. To study this aspect, researchers needed to obtain a relevant animal model.

An "authentic" progeria model?

To generate a model of this kind, Spanish and French researchers decided to introduce a gene mutation (G609G), equivalent to that identified in humans (G608G), in mice to reproduce the exact pathological mechanism found in the children, with a view to then blocking it. The mice models were created under the supervision of Bernard Malissen using the IBISA platform located at the Marseille-Luminy Centre of Immunology. This approach made it possible to obtain young mice that produced progerin, characteristic of the disease in humans. After three weeks alive, the mutated mice displayed growth defects, weight loss caused by bone deformation and cardiovascular and metabolic anomalies mirroring the human phenotype and considerably reducing their lifespan (an average of 103 days compared with two years for wild mice). The progerin thus produced accumulates in mouse cells via genetic mechanisms (abnormal splicing) identical to those observed in humans, i.e. the source of anomalies characteristic of the disease.

? for a targeted gene therapy

Using this unique progeria animal model, the researchers focussed their efforts on implementing a mutation-targeted treatment, with a view to reducing, and, if possible, preventing the production of progerin. To this end, they used "vivo-morpholino" antisense oligonucleotide technology. "This technology, explains Nicolas L?vy, is based on introducing a synthetic antisense aglionecleotide into mice. As is the case with progeria, this sequence is applied to block (or facilitate) the production of a functional protein using a gene. In this case, the production of progerin, as well as lamin A from the gene, were reduced."

There was a highly significant increase in life expectancy of mice treated using this new technology, from an average of 155 days to a maximum of 190 days.

Nicolas Levy's team, with continued collaboration with Carlos L?pez-Ot?n, now intend to translate this preclinical research into a new therapeutic trial for children, possibly combined with other pharmacological molecules. Other research is being conducted in parallel to find alternative administration channels for antisense oligonucleotides.

Injured vet's uncle appalled by police action (AP)

OAKLAND, Calif. ? An uncle of an Iraq War veteran injured when anti-Wall Street protesters clashed with police in Oakland, Calif., said he was appalled by officers' action.

A hospital spokesman says the 24-year-old veteran and Wisconsin native, Scott Olsen, was upgraded to fair condition and moved into an intensive care unit on Thursday.

His uncle, George Nygaard, tells The Associated Press from Wisconsin that Olsen's parents were heading to California on Thursday morning.

Olsen apparently suffered a fractured skull Tuesday in a march with other protesters toward Oakland City Hall. The demonstrators were trying to re-establish a presence in the area of a disbanded protesters' camp when they were met by officers.

It's not known exactly what type of object struck Olsen or who might have thrown it.

Murata Manufacturing shows off self-balancing electric walking aid

Walking assistants of the future come in all shapes and sizes -- from exoskeletons to high-tech walkers -- and you can now also this electric walking aid from Murata Manufacturing to the list of possibilities. It's inspired by some of the standalone robots that the company has built and, much like the Segway, it's able to maintain its balance and stand upright on its own (with an extra set of wheels for some added security). Unlike traditional walkers, however, it requires virtually no effort to push, with built-in sensors able to detect how much the person's body is tilted, and how fast or slow it should move to keep up with them -- it's also apparently powerful to carry a person's luggage or groceries. As you might have suspected, however, it's still just a prototype, and the company isn't ready to say when it might become an actual product. Head on past the break for the company's recent demonstration at CEATEC.

RUSTON, La. -- Students and graduates from Louisiana Tech University's College of Engineering and Science have teamed up with a Louisiana-based solar energy company to develop innovative ways of producing clean energy in homes and businesses across the country.

Louisiana Tech alumni Matthew Macaluso and Connor Beech as well as current senior engineering students are collaborating with Solar Energy Supply of West Monroe (La.) to develop a new line of solar "smart panels," which will optimize the amount of sunlight received to each panel, effectively increasing efficiency by up to 20 percent, while reducing the effects of shading and undesirable roof angles.

"I decided to stay in north Louisiana for the green technologies," said Macaluso. "The focus of my senior design project was green energy technologies. The project was successful and the opportunity presented itself to pursue a career in solar energy. Energy demand will only increase and solar presents a sensible, economical and sustainable source of energy."

Louisiana Tech and Solar Energy Supply began collaborating in the fall of 2010 when the company presented Tech with a "dilemma" of not having ample manpower to expand upon its green ideas. Senior engineering design students at Tech assisted Solar Energy Supply in making their green ideas a reality, designing and building of a solar panel from scratch. The Louisiana Tech students were also able to develop a testing method to determine power output without a flash tester, which is extremely costly.

Upon the completion of the project, Solar Energy Supply and the Louisiana Tech students had created an expertly designed solar panel ready to enter the marketplace. The "smart panel" technology they developed is a product of Nu-Cell Technologies, a sister company to Solar Energy Supply.

"It is refreshing for a university to be interested in starting a working relationship with a local business in the community that is expanding into 'green' energy manufacturing, with ample willingness," said Jennifer Eppinette, director of public relations and marketing for Solar Energy Supply.

A $1.1 million "i6 Green Challenge" grant, which was recently awarded to Louisiana Tech to establish the LA_i6 Proof of Concept Center on the Louisiana Tech campus, received written support from Solar Energy Supply. LA_i6 will be able to assist companies such as Solar Energy Supply to create new innovations and high-value service and manufacturing jobs in the green sector.

"I have been impressed by the entrepreneurial spirit that has led to the growth of SES," said Dr. Les Guice, vice president for research and development at Louisiana Tech. "We are so pleased that they have looked to Louisiana Tech to capitalize upon the talents of our students and innovations of our faculty. This is the kind of partnership that really benefits our entire region."

Jason Garsee, CEO of Nu-Cell Technologies, says developing new methods of producing solar energy is important to our region. "If we can make and produce our own energy, we become more energy independent. By expanding upon these new methods, we are able to not only advance a proven technology but also bring manufacturing back to Louisiana."

These methods will continue to provide green jobs to our area and allow these technologies to be utilized to their utmost potential. With the increasing costs of energy sources, solar is the future with its decreasing costs, high efficiencies and expanding technology."

"From my experience, Louisiana Tech assists small businesses with services they may not be able to do for themselves whether it's engineering or research development, media networking, or education on programs designed to help small business," Macaluso said. "There have been numerous start up businesses founded by Tech students and alumni alike. Combined with the relationships developed with local companies, the value of Louisiana Tech within the community is evident."

Yes, Prisoners Carry iPhones in Their Asses [Video]

If you think the cell phone explosion of recent years has somehow been kept at bay by prison walls, you would be greatly mistaken. Technology, like water, permeates every crack. Today on Lockdown, we're talking phones in jail. More »

Occupy ourselves!

Before assigning blame, we need to figure out each of our own roles in the economic mess that inspired "Occupy Wall Street."

So what is this Occupy Fill-in-the-Blank movement all about? I?ve been hearing the words ?openness,? ?honesty,? ?engagement,? ?dialogue,? ?listening,? ?attention,? and ?responsibility? a lot. Funny that these are words one often hears in relationship counseling or personal therapy sessions. And that?s no coincidence. Like the situations when we are having troubles in our relationships?our interactions with others?often we learn that the first place we have to look is within ourselves. What?s our own role in this mess of a relationship? We may want to pull our hair out over the bad behavior of others and blame them for our troubles, but usually at least part of the blame lies within ourselves, in our own part of the interaction and how we did or did not react to what the ?other? did or did not do.

Skip to next paragraph Diane Lim Rogers

Recent posts

And that?s why I started thinking that the Occupy Fill-in-the-Blank movement should start with ?Occupy Ourselves.? I wrote about it this way in my latest column in the Christian Science Monitor (the online version now available here)

What started as the ?Occupy Wall Street? demonstration has turned into an ?Occupy fill-in-the-blank? movement ? with the blank being anything we blame for our own economic troubles.

The main target seems to be the vaguely defined ?1 percent? ? that tiny minority of the wealthiest individuals and biggest corporations, the only ones those with economic and political power seem to serve. So the Occupy movement targets the big banks ? the culprits that got us into the financial crisis. Or the millionaires, because income inequality is at an all-time high. Or Congress, the lobbyists, and others in power who have failed to do good. All of them ? it?s their fault.

It?s not that the outrage isn?t justified. Policymakers catering to the oil and gas industry, to Wall Street, and to the rich and powerful deserve part of the blame. So do banks, ratings agencies, regulators, and others who set the stage for the financial crisis that triggered the recent ballooning of America?s debt. And as the wealthy have gotten wealthier, policymakers have chosen to only reduce their tax burdens.

Meanwhile, policymakers seem to care much less about the poor. The share of Americans living in poverty has steadily increased over the past decade to more than 15 percent ? the highest percentage since 1993 and approaching where it was when LBJ launched the nation?s ?war on poverty.? How is that fair?

But we also have to recognize that our economic problems began long before the financial crisis and that the boundary between the wealthy 1 percent and the 99 percent that the protesters claim to represent isn?t so crisp. Those big subsidies to the oil and banking industries also benefit the rest of Americans through lower gasoline prices and cheaper credit. And the majority of American voters went along with politicians who proposed very expensive deficit-financed tax cuts and deficit-financed prescription drug coverage, even though our young people ? the very core of the Occupy movement ? are the ones who will be stuck with the bill.

We all had a role in this, not just that 1 percent.

If there is a ?change we believe in,? we can?t just complain about the status quo. We have to spell out the better life we want and the trade-offs we?re willing to make to get there.

These are difficult trade-offs we each need to contemplate. Doing better for the other 99 percent of us requires real money, and that money has to come from somewhere. Are we willing to steer more federal funds to the most effective forms of spending in terms of both short-term stimulus and longer-term economic growth ? policies that would also benefit Americans more broadly ? and away from the less effective, less beneficial forms?

Would we be willing to receive less generous benefits from Social Security or Medicare or have our tax deductions reduced? Would we be willing to let go of our portion of the Bush tax cuts rather than insist that only millionaires and billionaires need to sacrifice theirs? And most important, if we want our ?occupying? to catalyze real change, would we be willing to speak up loud and clear about our willingness to make these specific trade-offs to our policymakers?

In the end, it?s easy to occupy Wall Street and protest what?s wrong. Far harder is to occupy ourselves with the tough choices that could move America away from its crisis path and toward surer footing as the world?s leading economy.

That?s the protest message we need to hear.

Some of the same idea comes through in this interview I gave to Talking Points Memo?s Kyle Leighton, in a column titled ?Bipolar Inequality? (a phrase I accidentally coined while sitting in the Milwaukee airport on the phone with Kyle; apparently sleep deprivation sometimes inspires my creativity):

Diane Lim Rogers, Chief Economist at the fiscally hawkish Concord Coalition, made similar points about the more reckless economic policies of the past decade: Much of the distaste with both Washington and Wall Street comes back to fact that DC is simply unwilling to change course.

?The difference is that during the Clinton years the rising tide was lifting all boats,? Lim Rogers said in an interview with TPM. ?Low-income households were still doing better. Even then, the rich did really well, despite their taxes being raised.?

But what?s different now is that income inequality isn?t a political tenet of the left: it?s truly hurting people. Lim Rogers said the poverty rate is actually of more concern than the rich doing better given the circumstances.

?The outrage is not that the rich are richer,? she said. ?It?s that the poor have gotten poorer ? the inequality has become bipolar.?

Which could help explain why when OWS [Occupy Wall Street] provided the spark, many Americans didn?t discount the movement as disaffected liberals who have no real point: it?s a real issue borne out by the numbers?

While Gallup showed that only 22 percent of Americans considered themselves supporters of OWS, other polls have shown larger amounts of support. Because, as Lim Rogers points out, the movement has centered on a more inclusionary focus.

?As the definition of the rich keeps shrinking, the movement feels like it gets more spirited,? she said. ?OWS is getting the support of most americans, because how can you disagree with the fact the top 1 percent has done well, but that poverty is increasing. I?m not surprised that OWS is doing well, and I think it?s justified. What Americans may not have a grasp of is that we are all part of the problem, because we continue to support politicians that support these policies.?

My point is that even those of us who are not in the top 1 percent of the income distribution may actually benefit from and at least implicitly support the policies that are perceived as ?those policies that cater to the top 1 percent.? And the policies that we think are letting down just the bottom 99 percent are actually letting down all 100 percent of us. It?s not ever going to be as easy as neatly sorting out the blame vs. the burden into the 1 vs. 99 percent. We?ll have to sort it out within each of ourselves first.

(Like those ?protesters? in the photo appear to be doing, actually. Just Say ?Om.?)

Apple TV: Coming in 2012? (The Cutline)

Jobs announces the price of the Apple TV in 2010. (AP)

Before Steve Jobs died, he told Walter Isaacson that he finally figured out how to translate Apple's magic with iPhones, iPods and Macbooks to consumer televisions.

"It will have the simplest user interface you could imagine," Jobs said in Isaacson's just-released biography on the late Apple chief.

Jobs had long admitted that Apple's current TV offering--a small, $99 device that plugs into TVs and streams programming from Netflix--was a "hobby" for the company, because there was no way to get an innovative product to market.

But according to a Bloomberg report, the new, integrated Apple TV that Jobs told Isaacson about could hit the market as early as next year.

Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller declined comment. But Jeff Robbin, the Apple executive behind the iPod and iTunes Store, is "now guiding Apple's internal development of the new TV effort," according to the report.

More from Bloomberg:

Apple has a prototype TV in the works and may introduce a product for sale by late next year or 2013, according to Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray Cos. He based that timing on meetings with contacts close to Apple's suppliers in Asia, industry contacts and Apple's patent portfolio. Munster said Apple also is investing in manufacturing facilities and securing supplies of LCD screens.

Faraway Eris is Pluto's twin

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

In November 2010, the distant dwarf planet Eris passed in front of a faint background star, an event called an occultation. These occurrences are very rare and difficult to observe as the dwarf planet is very distant and small. The next such event involving Eris will not happen until 2013. Occultations provide the most accurate, and often the only, way to measure the shape and size of a distant Solar System body.

The candidate star for the occultation was identified by studying pictures from the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory. The observations were carefully planned and carried out by a team of astronomers from a number of (mainly French, Belgian, Spanish and Brazilian) universities using ? among others ? the TRAPPIST telescope, also at La Silla.

"Observing occultations by the tiny bodies beyond Neptune in the Solar System requires great precision and very careful planning. This is the best way to measure Eris's size, short of actually going there," explains Bruno Sicardy, the lead author.

Observations of the occultation were attempted from 26 locations around the globe on the predicted path of the dwarf planet's shadow ? including several telescopes at amateur observatories, but only two sites were able to observe the event directly, both of them located in Chile. One was at ESO's La Silla Observatory using the TRAPPIST telescope, and the other was located in San Pedro de Atacama and used two telescopes. All three telescopes recorded a sudden drop in brightness as Eris blocked the light of the distant star.

The combined observations from the two Chilean sites indicate that Eris is close to spherical. These measurements should accurately measure its shape and size as long as they are not distorted by the presence of large mountains. Such features are, however, unlikely on such a large icy body.

Eris was identified as a large object in the outer Solar System in 2005. Its discovery was one of the factors that led to the creation of a new class of objects called dwarf planets and the reclassification of Pluto from planet to dwarf planet in 2006. Eris is currently three times further from the Sun than Pluto.

While earlier observations using other methods suggested that Eris was probably about 25% larger than Pluto with an estimated diameter of 3000 kilometres, the new study proves that the two objects are essentially the same size. Eris's newly determined diameter stands at 2326 kilometres, with an accuracy of 12 kilometres. This makes its size better known than that of its closer counterpart Pluto, which has a diameter estimated to be between 2300 and 2400 kilometres. Pluto's diameter is harder to measure because the presence of an atmosphere makes its edge impossible to detect directly by occultations. The motion of Eris's satellite Dysnomia was used to estimate the mass of Eris. It was found to be 27% heavier than Pluto Combined with its diameter, this provided Eris's density, estimated at 2.52 grams per cm^3.

"This density means that Eris is probably a large rocky body covered in a relatively thin mantle of ice," comments Emmanuel Jehin, who contributed to the study.

The surface of Eris was found to be extremely reflective, reflecting 96% of the light that falls on it (a visible albedo of 0.96). This is even brighter than fresh snow on Earth, making Eris one of the most reflective objects in the Solar System, along with Saturn's icy moon Enceladus. The bright surface of Eris is most likely composed of a nitrogen-rich ice mixed with frozen methane ? as indicated by the object's spectrum ? coating the dwarf planet's surface in a thin and very reflective icy layer less than one millimetre thick.

"This layer of ice could result from the dwarf planet's nitrogen or methane atmosphere condensing as frost onto its surface as it moves away from the Sun in its elongated orbit and into an increasingly cold environment," Jehin adds. The ice could then turn back to gas as Eris approaches its closest point to the Sun, at a distance of about 5.7 billion kilometres.

The new results also allow the team to make a new measurement for the surface temperature of the dwarf planet. The estimates suggest a temperature for the surface facing the Sun of -238 Celsius at most, and an even lower value for the night side of Eris.

"It is extraordinary how much we can find out about a small and distant object such as Eris by watching it pass in front of a faint star, using relatively small telescopes. Five years after the creation of the new class of dwarf planets, we are finally really getting to know one of its founding members," concludes Bruno Sicardy.

Mexican grocery store leads Indianapolis to drug bust (Reuters)

INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) ? More than five tons of marijuana and $4.3 million in drug money were confiscated in Indianapolis after authorities noticed unusual activity at a Mexican grocery store, officials said on Monday.

United States Attorney Joseph H. Hogsett said the drug bust was the biggest in Marion County and one of the largest, if not the largest, in Indiana's history.

Hogsett praised the efforts of the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Metropolitan Drug Task Force and other officials at a morning news conference for taking the marijuana off the streets and millions away from "Mexican drug lords."

The investigation started last March when police suspected illegal activities at an Indianapolis Mexican grocery store. A tractor-trailer leaving the store was found to have $2.6 million in drug assets hidden in a false roof.

Surveillance efforts led officials to an Indianapolis warehouse containing five large metal storage containers filled with plastic-wrapped marijuana.

Jairo Ramirez, 26, Efren Perez, 20, Julio Cesar Castaneda, 36 and Tomas Toledo, 29, face charges for conspiracy to possess drugs with the intent to distribute and distributing 1,000 kilograms or more of marijuana. Castaneda and Toledo were also identified as being in the United States illegally.

U.S. pulls ambassador out of Syria (Politico)

Amid escalating protests in Syria after Muammar Qadfafi?s death, the United States pulled Ambassador Robert Ford out of Syria over the weekend due to concerns for his personal safety and accused the government of incitement against him, the State Department said Monday.

?Ambassador Robert Ford was brought back to Washington as a result of credible threats against his personal safety in Syria,? State Department Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner said in a statement.

?At this point, we can?t say when he will return to Syria. It will depend on our assessment of Syrian regime-led incitement and the security situation on the ground. We hope that the Syrian regime will end its incitement campaign against Ambassador Ford,? Toner added.

The withdrawal of the American ambassador, which according to Reuters occurred over the weekend, comes during the seventh month of an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

Demonstrations in Syria escalated over the weekend after the death of Libyan dictator Muammar Qadhafi.

?Gadhafi is gone, and you?re next, oh butcher,? Syrian protesters chanted Friday in protests, according to the AP, adding, ?Your turn is coming, Bashar.?

Assad has responded to demonstrations against his government with violence, leading to an increasingly hostile American response. The weekend?s demonstrations led to the deaths of 24 people nationwide, according to activists.

The decision to yank Ford comes after multiple incidents in which the ambassador and the U.S. embassy were attacked and harassed.

In late September, Ford was pelted with tomatoes by Assad supporters as he met with a Syrian opposition leader. About 100 protesters tried to storm the office building where the meeting was being held, but they were prevented from entering.

In August, Ford was harassed by another group of protesters, one of which tried to wrap him in a poster of the Syrian president. Ford?s security team was able to rush the ambassador into a waiting car.|

Ford had also been making surprise and unauthorized visits to areas where anti-Assad opposition is strongest. The ambassador made earlier visits to Jassem and Hama, which have been flashpoints of anti-government sentiment.

The State Department said Monday that they were pleased with Ford?s efforts in Syria.

?Ambassador Ford?s presence is a benefit to our mission in Syria as he has worked diligently to deliver our message and be our eyes on the ground. This decision was based solely on the need to ensure his safety, a matter we take extremely seriously,? said Toner.

The U.S. has aggressively called for the Syrian president to step down, and has tightened sanctions against the Middle Eastern country over the past few months.

?His calls for dialogue and reform have rung hollow while he is imprisoning, torturing and slaughtering his own people,? President Obama said in August. ?For the sake of the Syrian people, the time has come for President Assad to step aside.?

Meanwhile, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) suggested on Sunday that the United States should consider a military intervention in Syria.

?Now that military operations in Libya are ending, there will be renewed focus on what practical military operations might be considered to protect civilian lives in Syria,? McCain said at the World Economic Forum in Jordan. ?The Assad regime should not consider that it can get away with mass murder. Qadhafi made that mistake and it cost him everything.?

Speaking just days after the death of Muammar Qadhafi, the Arizona senator said that Bashar al-Assad has ?spilled too much blood to stay in power,? and suggested that the Syrian leader will continue to murder more of his people.

The Obama administration has denounced Assad as having lost his legitimacy but has made no indication of taking military action in Syria by drawing clear distinctions between Libya and Syria.

?I understand the desire to make analogies and comparisons. One thing that we have said from the beginning, this whole year, is that circumstances in each country is different,? White House press secretary Jay Carney said last week. ?Every country is different, and I think we have been absolutely clear about our position with regards to Syria, with regard to the Syrian regime.?

House Speaker Boehner assails Obama "reset" with Russia (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The top Republican in Congress on Tuesday assailed President Barack Obama's "reset" policy with Russia as contrary to U.S. interests and values, and urged him to rethink his approach in light of Vladimir Putin's impending return to the Kremlin.

House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, in a rare speech on foreign policy, warned that Russia's response to Obama's much-vaunted outreach was "nothing short of an attempt to restore Soviet-style power and influence."

Pushing for a tougher line, Boehner pressured Obama not to agree to Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization until Moscow settles a territorial dispute with neighboring Georgia, a U.S. ally, stemming from their brief 2008 war.

In an address to the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank in Washington, he also urged the administration to do more to "compel" Russia to curb its ties with Iran, particularly on nuclear and missile technology, and called for a stronger effort to get Moscow to address human rights concerns.

"The United States should insist Russia 'reset' its own policies. If those appeals require teeth, the House stands ready to approve them," Boehner said.

Taking aim at the reengagement with Russia that Obama has touted as one of his top foreign policy achievements, Boehner voiced suspicion harbored by many U.S. conservatives over the decision by Putin, a former KGB spymaster, to reclaim the presidency next year.

"Soon, Russia will be officially led by someone known to harbor intense Soviet nostalgia," he said.

Boehner's speech, at a time when Republicans are deadlocked with Obama over domestic policy, sought to raise fresh doubts over the Democratic president's global leadership and broaden the assault on his record beyond his economic stewardship.

There was no immediate White House reaction.

But polls show foreign policy is likely to gain little traction in the 2012 election campaign, when concerns over the stagnant U.S. economy and high unemployment are expected drive voters' decision whether or not to give Obama a second term.

PLAYS BALL WITH 'DANGEROUS REGIMES'?

Boehner said that since Obama took office nearly three years ago, Russia "has been the beneficiary of American outreach and engagement."

He said Russia, in response, has "continued to expand its physical, political and economic presence," uses its vast energy resources as a political weapon and "plays ball with unstable and dangerous regimes."

With Putin -- who held the presidency from 2000-2008 -- apparently assured of returning to office in the March election, Boehner said: "It's only appropriate to ask whether the Obama administration will now reconsider its policy toward Russia."

The White House has insisted that the reset in relations would remain on track despite the looming leadership reshuffle in Moscow.

Analysts say that even though Putin has been the power behind the scenes, his return to the presidency could undermine some progress achieved under his protege, President Dmitry Medvedev, in reconciling the former Cold War foes.

There are also doubts whether Putin, known for a more nationalistic tone and strident anti-U.S. rhetoric, will be able to develop much of personal rapport with Obama, who worked well with the technocratic Medvedev.

"I'm not here to argue for open conflict, or against productive engagement," Boehner said, citing potential cooperation on arms control, counterterrorism and trade.

But he made clear his view that Obama's approach had neglected human rights and political reform in Russia.

"We cannot sacrifice values or get away with walling off our interests from our moral imperatives," Boehner said. "Instead of downplaying Russia's disregard for democratic values and human rights, we should call on them and call them out on it. Publicly, forcefully, frequently."

International human rights activists have criticized the administration for not taking a strong enough stand on the issue with world powers like Russia and China.

The White House insists that Obama speaks out when necessary while reserving some of his toughest language for private talks with leaders.
