?The deadline for the public to nominate a person, business entity, and/or an organization for one or more of the 18 awards categories for the 19th Annual Eagle Pass Business Journal Awards is Monday, December 31, 2012, at 5:00 p.m., ? announced Ricardo E. Calderon, Publisher of the Eagle Pass Business Journal.

The 19th Annual Eagle Pass Business Journal Awards will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. at the El Residencial Reception Hall in Eagle Pass. The Eagle Pass Business Journal Awards purpose is to recognize and honor individuals, businesses, entrepreneurs, non-profit organizations and entities who excelled in their professional endeavors and made a positive contribution to the community during 2012.

The 18 awards categories include the Employee of the Year, the Secretary of the Year, the Restaurant of the Year, the Franchise of the Year, the Small Business of the Year, the Teacher of the Year, the Professional of the Year, the Entrepreneur of the Year, the Physician of the Year, the Health Care Provider of the Year, the Big Business of the Year, the International Business of the Year, the Business Manager of the Year, the Public Manager of the Year, the Public Representative of the Year, the Business Advocate of the Year, the Non-Profit Organization of the Year, and the New Business of the Year. Nominations are also welcomed for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Activists are reporting clashes near the airport of the Syrian capital, Damascus, as Internet and cellular telephones continued to be cut for the third day.

A day earlier, 20 Lebanese were killed inside Syria while fighting alongside rebels to topple President Bashar Assad. The news heightened tensions in neighboring Lebanon.

Lebanese troops deployed to the northern city of Tripoli after the deaths were announced late Friday and Sunni Muslim gunmen fired into the air in tribute. The city was clam Saturday.

The vast majority of Syria's rebels are also Sunnis. Assad ? along with his most elite troops ? belongs to the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Syria-based activist Mohammed Saeed reported heavy fighting and shelling near Damascus' airport Saturday.

Is Apple ARMing for war against Intel? | Opinion | Columnists | Mail ...

Rumours are circulating that Apple may abandon Intel chips in favour of those designed by ARM Holdings.

Bloomberg reported on November 6 that "people familiar with the company's research" had said Apple was "exploring" the idea. Of course these sources "asked to remain anonymous", and Silicon Valley rumours are notoriously unreliable. Yet there is some logic to the idea.?

Intel has reigned supreme in the microprocessor chip market since the 1970s. A microprocessor is the brain of your computer ? processing the millions of signals required to do everything from editing a document to surfing the web.?

Intel's chips power hundreds of millions of computers around the world. Together with Microsoft Windows, Intel's technology has defined the vast majority of the computer industry for four decades.

When Apple moved to using Intel chips in 2005, it hugely increased the appeal of its computers to both end users and software developers. Where software for Macs was once limited to those willing to write for its PowerPC architecture, now software used on Windows computers could be (relatively) easily modified for both markets.

The problem with the PowerPC chips was that they used a different "instruction set" to Intel's chips. Essentially the two families of chips spoke completely incompatible languages, and thus could not understand (i.e. process) each other's software.

Yet Apple actually moved for a different and more fundamental reason: speed. Motorola, who manufactured Apple's PowerPC chips, simply couldn't keep up with the increasing demand for processing speed. Intel, as the market leader in performance, was the obvious choice. The software compatibility was just a nice bonus.

So why on earth would Apple be considering a move away from Intel, particularly after moving chip providers less than a decade ago? Two words sum up the logic: mobile computing.?

When Apple launched the iPhone in 2007 it decided against using Intel's chips. Why? Chips are like cars ? when you drive them fast they tend use a lot more fuel and to heat up. Too much heat and they seize and "crash" or even burn out permanently. And without a constant supply of fuel they will quickly grind to a halt.

Intel has long specialised in the muscle car variety of chips: hugely powerful but also very hot and energy hungry. Both of these things are problematic in a device like a phone, which has a small battery and a limited ability to cool itself down. Computers typically have fans to cool their chips ? phones cannot afford that luxury in either space or power usage.

And so Apple chose to use chips designed by ARM, a small but resilient British firm that has been quietly working on its own chip technology since the 1980s. ARM chips aren't as powerful as Intel's bruisers, but they use far less power and produce much less heat. They are the Toyota Prius to Intel's Ford Mustang.

The spectacular success of first the iPhone and then iPad, both of which use ARM's chips, has prompted some analysts to wonder if Intel's days at the top might be numbered. This latest rumour seems to confirm that Apple is also thinking that way. Given Apple's enormous size and influence, just these unconfirmed hints were enough to knock 1% off Intel's share price and add 2% to ARM's.

There are some other tempting advantages to Apple moving away from Intel. Apple and ARM essentially collaborate on chip design, giving Apple much more influence over the final result. And by moving its computers to ARM, Apple would have a single chipset across all its devices, allowing for a much more unified customer experience across its platforms.

Apple's leadership is not scared of making big leaps. Its current CEO, Tim Cook, is the man Steve Jobs put in charge of the switch from PowerPC to Intel in 2005. Even Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, has admitted he was impressed by how seamlessly Apple managed that difficult transition.?

It's worth remembering that this is all theoretical. ARM chips may be efficient, but Intel chips still outperform them by a large margin. People don't expect their tablet computer to jump through hoops the way they do their desktop or laptop computer. Tasks such as editing video or large spreadsheets require raw horsepower and Intel is currently well ahead on that front.

And even if you take the rumours as gospel, Apple will only attempt the move in 2017. Presumably its management team is betting that ARM architecture can be scaled up enough by then to service both mobile and traditional computing markets.?

It must also be betting that the software available for the ARM chips keeps pace, or it will have a lot of very unhappy customers. Ordinary consumers care as much about which chip their computer uses as which brand of spark plug their car requires. If their favourite software package doesn't work on the new range of Apple laptops, they will look elsewhere.

And if the rumours are indeed true, Apple will need to replicate its trick from 2005, but with a company roughly 20 times the size and a customer base more than 100 times as large. That may not be quite as simple as in the good old days.

Government posts in Georgia show pro-West course

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) ? The billionaire whose opposition coalition won Georgia's parliamentary election tapped two former diplomats with pro-Western views on Monday to take key positions in the government when he becomes prime minister later this month.

Bidzina Ivanishvili's choices reinforce his pledge to maintain the former Soviet republic's close ties with the United States and to work toward closer integration with the European Union.

The pro-Western course was set by President Mikhail Saakashvili, who remains president for another year but lost the power to form the government when his party was defeated in a parliamentary election a week ago.

Among the members of the next government announced Monday are Maia Panjikidze, a former ambassador to EU countries, who will become foreign minister, and Irakly Alasania, a former ambassador to the United Nations, who will take the post of defense minister.

The future foreign minister said Georgia's pro-Western course will not change. "This is the choice of the Georgian people," said Panjikidze, who served as ambassador to Germany from 2004 to 2007 and ambassador to Germany from 2007 to 2010.

"Our main partner will be the U.S. and these relations should deepen. But we should not forget our neighbors, those near and far, and we should begin with relations with Russia," she said.

Ivanishvili, who made his fortune in Russia, has stressed the need to restore relations with Moscow, which have been severed since the two countries fought a brief war in August 2008. He has taken pains, however, to counter accusations that he will put Georgia back under Russian domination and announced that his first foreign trip as prime minister will be to the United States.

The 38-year-old Alasania served as Georgia's ambassador to the U.N. from 2006 until December 2008, when he resigned and joined the opposition to Saakashvili.

Ivanishvili announced his choices to fill about a dozen Cabinet positions, but said he was still working on the appointments for the ministers of finance, economic development and education.

The new government, to be led by Ivanishvili as prime minister, will be confirmed after the new parliament convenes on Oct. 20. His Georgian Dream coalition will hold 83 of the 150 seats, with the remaining 67 seats under the control of Saakashvili's party.

As president, Saakashvili will retain greater powers until his second and last term ends after an October 2013 presidential election. After that election, however, a constitutional reform goes into effect that will transfer some of the president's powers to the prime minister.

Exercise more

By following current guidelines on exercise?30 minutes a day, most days a week?you can bring down your blood pressure significantly, says Gerald Fletcher, MD, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic, in Jacksonville, Fla., and a spokesman for the American Heart Association. If you?ve been sedentary, try aerobic exercise to reduce your systolic blood pressure?the top number?by three to five points, and the bottom by two to three, says Dr. Fletcher.
People who get moving are often able to reduce the number of hypertension medications they?re on, he adds. Pick something you like?walking, running, swimming, cycling?and stick with it.

Eat bananas

You probably know that eating too much salt can raise blood pressure, but most people aren?t aware of the benefits of potassium, which counters sodium?s ill effects. Most don?t get enough of this mineral.
According to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, people with hypertension may especially benefit from upping the amount of potassium in their diet. Adults should get at least 4,700 milligrams a day. A few good sources: bananas (422 milligrams each), a baked potato with skin (738 milligrams), orange juice (496 milligrams per cup), and nonfat or low-fat yogurt (531?579 milligrams per 8 ounces).

Cut salt

People with normal blood pressure, moderately high blood pressure, and full-fledged hypertension can substantially reduce their blood pressure by cutting salt intake. The Dietary Guidelines recommend that people with hypertension limit their intake of salt to less than 1,500 milligrams (600 milligrams of sodium) a day. We get most of our sodium from processed foods, so stick with whole foods. When you do eat foods with nutrition labels, be sure to check their sodium content.

Don?t smoke

Smokers are at higher risk of hypertension. But even though tobacco and nicotine in cigarettes can cause temporary spikes in blood pressure, smoking itself is not thought to cause chronic hypertension.(Instead, factors associated with smoking, like heavy alcohol consumption and lack of exercise, might be responsible.) Nevertheless, quitting smoking may help you lower your blood pressure a bit, says Dr. Fletcher. And, of course, the other health benefits are countless.

Lose weight

Research has consistently shown that dropping just a few pounds can have a substantial impact on your blood pressure. Excess weight makes your heart work harder. This extra strain can lead to hypertension, while losing weight lightens your cardiovascular workload. If you?re overweight or obese, losing weight may be enough to get your blood pressure under control.

Cut back on alcohol

But people should not think of yoga as providing the same benefit as aerobic exercise, Burg says. ?Each potentially produces benefit in different ways.?

Skip caffeine

Coffee has some health benefits, but lowering blood pressure isn?t one of them. Caffeine can cause short-term spikes in blood pressure, even in people without hypertension. If you have high blood pressure, it?s a good idea to moderate your caffeine intake to about two cups of coffee per day. You can check whether you?re sensitive to caffeine?s blood-pressure-boosting effects by checking your blood pressure before and within a half hour after consuming your caffeinated beverage. If it increases by 5 or 10 points, you could be caffeine sensitive.

Meditate

Meditation?whether it involves chanting, breathing, visualization, or all the above?can be an effective stress-management tool for many people, Burg says. Again, the important thing is that it makes you feel good, and that you can commit to doing it consistently.

Whatever you do, don?t guess your credit score. These numbers change every day, and it could be possible that the number is actually better than what you may believe.

Renters can easily pull their own credit score if they are not working with an agent. You can download a free credit report at www.annualcreditreport.com. Credit scores range from 300 to 850. Scores above 700 are considered to be good.

Rule number two- be honest. If you apply for a property, do not let the landlord discover your low credit on their own. If you are willing to let a landlord run your credit, warn them about the possibility of a low score ahead of time. No one likes surprises, especially a landlord.

Rule number three- explain. Set up a face-to-face meeting with the landlord and talk about your circumstances. They may be willing to take certain factors into consideration when making the decision on whether to extend you a lease or not. Matters of high medical bills, divorce, or student loan debt may be deemed lesser offenses from the perspective of a landlord.

If a face-to-face meeting is not possible, try writing a cover letter explaining your credit history. You don?t need to go into too much detail, but let the landlord know how the issues came up, and what you have done to correct them.

There are numerous other techniques a renter can use to persuade a landlord to rent to them.

Try putting down a larger security deposit. While it may be extremely difficult for some people to find extra money to put down towards a deposit, this method may convince a landlord to lease to you. Putting down more money when you sign the lease signals that you are less of a risk.

In addition to the usual letters of reference from your employer, another strategy is to get a letter from your previous landlord indicating that you paid rent on time and were a good tenant. The letter should clearly indicate the name of your previous landlord, along with a contact number in case the current landlord wants to follow up with more questions. You could even go so far as to provide proof of your timely payments by printing out rent-payment stubs or copies of canceled checks for the past two years and submit these with your application.

Although it might take you longer to find a home to rent if you have bad credit, you have a lot of control over the situation as long as you can show why you aren?t as risky a proposition as your credit suggests.

If you have bad credit, you want to demonstrate your credibility to a landlord by providing any evidence that enhances your image as a reliable tenant. Bad credit is deemed a high risk and you have to give them some incentive to do business with you. They don't know you and you are a risk until you can prove otherwise.

NASA scientists deserve every high-five and hug received for surviving ?seven minutes of terror? and?safely landing the 1-ton Curiosity rover on Mars, but what?s up with the spacecraft?s dinky 2 megapixel camera and equally dinky PowerPC 750 computer chip?

The spacecraft also has just 4.5 gigabytes of data storage, Information Management points out in a profile of Ann Devereaux, deputy lead for the entry, descent and landing stage of Curiosity?s mission at NASA?s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

?When people saw the data volumes we process and the memory space they?d inevitably ask, ?You?re taking this to Mars?? Deveraux told the newsletter. ?Why isn?t this the latest gear? My memory stick has more memory than your whole computer.?

The short answer, NASA scientists and space observers point out, is the team started working on the mission in 2004. At the time, these components were state-of-the-art technology already approved for the rigors of space travel including radiation bombardment and temperature extremes.

The problem is that the pace of technology moves so fast that what was relatively high-tech less than a decade ago looks comparatively lame today. Sure, any images whatsoever from the surface of Mars are super cool. But where?s the real-time streaming video?

In addition to the long-lead time for design and testing of components to fly on a mission to Mars (remember, there?s no Best Buy there to put that extended warranty to use should something break), transmitting the data from Mars to Earth is a tricky proposition. ExtremeTech notes:?

The rover sends data to two satellites that orbit Mars, which then relay it back to Earth. This stream of data is quite limited, to something like 256 megabits (32MB) a day. And images aren?t the only thing that Curiosity is sending back ? there are all sorts of other recordings and measurements that needs to be transmitted.

So, give NASA and Curiosity a break and relish in the images that do find their way back to Earth, which are indeed quite stunning. ?

Let?s just hope The Onion is joking with a report that Curiosity?s memory card is full and the?mission is over.

?I guess we probably should have deleted those old Hubble photos off there before the mission," the tongue-in-cheek fake?news site quoted chief scientist John Grotzinger as saying.

Natural birth -- but not C-section -- triggers brain-boosting proteins

ScienceDaily (Aug. 8, 2012) ? Vaginal birth triggers the expression of a protein in the brains of newborns that improves brain development and function in adulthood, according to a new study by Yale School of Medicine researchers, who also found that this protein expression is impaired in the brains of offspring delivered by caesarean section (C-sections).

These findings are published in the August issue of PLoS ONE by a team of researchers led by Tamas Horvath, the Jean and David W. Wallace Professor of Biomedical Research and chair of the Department of Comparative Medicine at Yale School of Medicine.

The team studied the effect of natural and surgical deliveries on mitochondrial uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) in mice. UCP2 is important for the proper development of hippocampal neurons and circuits. This area of the brain is responsible for short- and long-term memory. UCP2 is involved in cellular metabolism of fat, which is a key component of breast milk, suggesting that induction of UCP2 by natural birth may aid the transition to breast feeding.

The researchers found that natural birth triggered UCP2 expression in the neurons located in the hippocampal region of the brain. This was diminished in the brains of mice born via C-section. Knocking out the UCP2 gene or chemically inhibiting UCP2 function interfered with the differentiation of hippocampal neurons and circuits, and impaired adult behaviors related to hippocampal functions.

"These results reveal a potentially critical role of UCP2 in the proper development of brain circuits and related behaviors," said Horvath. "The increasing prevalence of C-sections driven by convenience rather than medical necessity may have a previously unsuspected lasting effect on brain development and function in humans as well."

Other authors on the study included Julia Simon-Areces, Marcelo O. Dietrich, Gretchen Hermes, Luis Miguel Garcia-Segura, and Maria-Angeles Arevalo.The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Saving Doe Mountain - Scrapbook

Late this spring, the Sierra Club's Watauga Group?celebrated a big victory when 8,600 acres of Doe Mountain, in the state's northeastern corner, was officially saved from clear-cutting and exclusive private development.

"This is a huge win, and it protects a significant portion of our Watauga Watershed," says Gloria Griffith, right, chair of the Watauga Group.

Among the top priorities of the Watauga Group (the Tennessee Sierra Club's newest group) has been protecting water quality in Doe Creek, a spring-fed creek that runs around Doe Mountain.?Doe Creek supports an exceptional wild rainbow trout population and some of the largest fish sampled in Tennessee streams in recent years.

The creek flows then into Watauga Lake, a Tennesee Valley Authority?reservoir that sits 1,959 feet above sea level and is known for its exceptionally clean water. TVA?describes?the lake as being located "...in some of the most beautiful country in the Tennessee River watershed."

Thanks to the heads-up work of Watauga Group activists, notably Gabby Lynch and Dennis Shekinah, Doe Mountain will remain forested and open to the public. That's?Shekinah at left, below;?Lynch at right.

Let's let Dennis tell the story (which appeared in the June/July issue of the Tennessee Chapter's newsletter, the Tenne-Sierran):

Doe Mountain encompasses 8,600 acres of wilderness known best by hunters on foot and Tennessee Wildlife Research Agency officers in 4-wheel-drive vehicles. It is home to black bear, white tail, fox, coyote, turkey, king squirrel, bobcat and, some say, cougar.

Left alone for generations, this slice of heaven is about to change. Soon, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), horses, mountain bikes, and hikers from all corners will be drawn to Doe, altering its timeless and peaceful character forever. Let me explain why this is a good thing...

My log cabin (below), built in the 1920s, sits in the shade of Doe Mountain in Neva Valley. In fields where the Cherokee once lived, I have hosted countless bluegrass gatherings, raised children, and planted seeds in the fertile soil. In all the years I explored the Doe's trails, I can only recall coming across two other people. They were both hunters and as nice as they could be. Doe Mountain was a well-kept secret, hidden smack dab in the middle of Johnson County, Tennessee.

Then one morning the sound of chain saws broke the peaceful melody of the East Fork Fall Brach. The dogs kept up as I literally ran into the sanctuary. I found a group of men clearing the jeep trail and setting a metal gate across its path. They seemed nice, but busy. I left them to their job and returned to my cabin and started working the phone. A developer had purchased Doe Mountain to build a gated community. Gates on all access points were a statement to his strict 'no trespassing' policy. No more hunting. No more quiet walks with my camera on Doe.

It turned out the deed for the mountain changed hands several times when the state didn't opt to renew the Wilderness Management Area lease from the original owners. A logging company owned it for less than a month before the developer laid enough easy money on the table to get them to sell. A gated community can yield millions of dollars in profit; indeed, he had done it many times before.

After resigning myself to the inevitable march of progress, I said a prayer for the black bear and all the critters who would eventually be displaced by manicured lawns and electrified fences. Then two things changed everything: the housing bubble burst and the developer died from a massive coronary. The Doe Mountain gated community project, named "Daniel's Trace," went into bankruptcy. No one seemed to know who owned the mountain or what its fate would be.

Months passed without any news, save rumor and speculation. Then one morning the phone rang and Larry Potter (below), our county mayor, asked, "Dennis, do you know anyone with eight million dollars?" Larry owns a small eatery in Doe Valley, and he had overheard a logger proclaim that he was going to clear-cut Doe Mountain. Yes, like a shark sensing blood in the water, the logging company was putting a bid on the deed and had already done an assessment of the lumber's worth.

Larry was desperate. Not only is he a fly-fisherman (and thus a clean-water advocate by default), he is passionate about Johnson County's economic development. An 8,600-acre scar in the middle of our county wasn't going to bring in the tourists.

Our closest neighbor to the north, Damascus, Virginia, had already saved itself from potential ruin by developing a bicycle-friendly trail system. Johnson County could do it one better, Larry thought. We have Watauga Lake, the Appalachian Trail, and a network of great B&Bs and small family-owned restaurants. We just needed a hook to pull in outdoor enthusiasts. That was Doe Mountain, Larry rightfully reasoned.

But the sharks were circling. "I'll make some calls," I told Larry. I immediately got ahold of my friend Gabby Lynch (below), a Watauga Group activist who works for The Nature Conservancy (TNC).

True to form, Gabby was already on the Doe Mountain situation. In short order, an environmental assessment was done and she applied for a loan from TNC international headquarters. Larry worked his network of state representatives (most notably Lieutenant Governor Ron Ramsey). Gabby asked that we send letters of thanks and encouragement for Ramsey's efforts to secure funding for saving Doe Mountain. Still, months passed without any news?

At our monthly Watauga Group meetings, Gabby would place her finger over her lips and shake her head: "Don't say a word." We had no reason to feel overly hopeful in this age of budgetary austerity. The Nature Conservancy had many worthy projects that needed funding, and newly-elected Governor Bill Haslam was slashing budgets. Somehow, Larry got the governor in an ATV and took him, along with the lieutenant governor, along the trails of the Doe.

Soon thereafter, Gabby announced that The Nature Conservancy had approved the loan to save Doe Mountain, and the great state of Tennessee arranged to immediately buy Doe from TNC. A "multi-use" provision would be attached as a condition, assuring that the mountain would be developed to offer all citizens a chance to know a little of the peace that comes from nature even if they were looking out from the top of a horse, a wheelchair, a bicycle or a caravan of ATVs.

We may never know all the players who made this deal possible, but as I look out my window at beautiful Doe Mountain, I give thanks?a heartfelt prayer of thanks raised up join those of all the wildlife and trees that depend on good people doing the right thing.

How to Start a Mobile Computer-Repair Business | GoPayment Blog

Few things cause more professional panic than a crashed hard drive or a system-disabling virus, which means savvy computer repair technicians have ample opportunity to create thriving mobile businesses.

The GoPayment Blog recently talked with engineer Matt Karls of Karls Technology?Computer Repair (which operates under other DBAs as well) in Arizona to get his tips for starting a mobile computer-repair business. Here?s what he told us.

1. Decide who you?ll serve. Computer techs often specialize in certain services or decide to work exclusively on either residential or commercial accounts. For instance, Karls says that he focuses on virus removal, data recovery from dead or damaged hard drives, and server management for businesses.

2. Get the right tools. According to Karls, very little hardware or software is required to run a mobile computer-repair business. You will need ?a computer with some data-recovery software, a good ICSA certified anti-virus program, and a SATA-to-USB adapter.? Although a wireless WAN or air card is helpful, Karls says he has successfully operated without one in the past. Beyond that, he adds, you only need a vehicle and a phone to open your business.

3. Be prepared to work hard. When asked how many hours a week he works, Karls said that he?s been working 18 to 20 hours a day, six days a week. That?s a lot of hours (and not something we?d recommend), but according to him, he could get back to his ?normal? hours of 12 to 14 hours six days a week if he refused more work or hired another computer systems engineer, something he?s currently looking for. The point is that, in this type of business, it?s important to be available to your customers. Karls says that working Saturdays is crucial because while most businesses are open Monday through Friday, residential customers are typically only available after 5 p.m. or on weekends.

4. Get some training. You don?t need a specific license (other than the standard business license) or certification to operate a mobile computer-repair business, but Karls recommends a minimum of a CompTIA A+ and Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert certification. This will give you some added credibility with clients and ensure that you have the skills to do the job, he notes.

Jet Set Radio skating onto Android 'this summer'

Here's a blast from the past for everyone. Sega has been pretty good at bringing us some of our favorite games from yesteryear to play on our Android devices, and this summer we get to play another one. It's been announced today that the HD remake of Jet Set Radio, due to land on consoles, will also be coming to Android. 

Anyone who owned a Sega Dreamcast will quite possibly remember, fondly, Jet Set Radio from the first time around. In my case, I've still got a copy. The mobile version will have some mobile-centric features too, one of which is Openfeint integration. Apparently, players will also be able to use pictures taken on their device as the in-game graffiti. Now that's a nice touch. Just don't do anything rude with it, OK, kids. 

We're really looking forward to this one, and despite no more accurate date than "this summer," we're sure it's going to be worth waiting for. Check out the full press release after the break.

Last month the Victorian Regional and Rural Development Minister Peter Ryan released a state Regional Communication Policy, and the commercial radio industry has now written to all other State Premiers and Chief Ministers urging them to consider a similar policy. While Communications is a federal policy area, states control the way they spend money with regional media and how they communicate their messages to regional populations, and this is the area the Victorian policy covers.

The Victorian policy document says ?regional media is important in reaching into the community and should be explicitly considered when targeting regional audiences.? It requires a minimum of 15% of total annual campaign expenditure to be spend with regional and rural media. Read the Victorian policy here.?

CRA Chief executive Joan Warner says the recently announced Victorian Regional Communication Policy is ?a good step? in more actively engaging with regional media outlets to communicate critical information to local communities.

Around 6.9 million Australians listen to commercial radio in regional Australia each week and one in five are heavy listeners of radio.
