Family Board Games: Classic Board Games Versus Video Games ? The ...

Many members of the older crowd remember back in the days when board games were the only way to play games. However, with the moving forward of technology, there are also lots in the younger crowd who are demanding faster paced games, more advanced technology, and more interactive systems. Who is right in the great classic board games versus video games debate? Read below to read an unbiased comparison that puts the two against each other.

Board Games ? Back to Basics

You can?t have a debate on classic board games versus video games without looking to where gaming all began. Before the Xbox, Playstation, or even Nintendo were even invented, people played board games as a way of entertaining themselves and to pass the time. They were (and still are) used as a social element to bring people together with a common task. Whether it?s Scrabble, Backgammon, Monopoly or the always-classic Risk, there is a board game to entertain someone with any interest.

There are even a wide variety of board games geared toward children. No matter who you are, board games can be a very fun and very social experience.

Video Games ? The New School

The newcomer in the classic board games versus video games debate is, of course, the video game. Lovers of video games are fond of the interaction they are able to achieve by playing one. There are numerous different systems to choose from and thousands of different games. Just like board games, there is something for everybody. From first-person shooters to fantasy to racing games, everyone will find some form of video game that they enjoy.

Many people claim that just because video games are currently more popular, they automatically win the classic board games versus video games debate. I don?t believe this is true. I think that, although video games are widely popular, they tend to be not as social as classic board games are. Sure, you might be able to play a game with someone over a virtual network and talk to them through a headset, but the games tend to lack the eye contact and tangibility of playing a board game at a table with some friends.

The Verdict

Whether it is board games or video games, the purpose of playing such things is to enjoy yourself and have fun. For this reason, it?s easy to see how much this has to do with personal preference. Instead of choosing one over the other, why not play with both depending on the circumstances? If you are having people over, why not play a fun board game that will get everybody interacting? Similarly, when you are alone, why not pop in a video game for hours of entertainment?

When it comes to the classic board games versus video games debate, the true answer is that both have their place within our society. Although there may come a time when one is definitely better than the other, for now they are still both great options for a good time.
