One of the classic staples of job search techniques is cold calling. Statistics show that it?s one of the most effective methods of finding open positions, building a network, and learning more about a profession. But it?s not enough to just pick up the phone and start calling. It takes a lot of patience, effort, and courage to conduct a cold-calling campaign in your job search. So make the most of the process by using these proven technques.
Do Your Homework
Cold calls aren?t nearly as intrusive or objectionable when they don?t sound entirely ?cold.? So do your homework and learn all you can about the company you?re calling and who you?re planning to speak to. That way you can speak intelligently to whoever you end up speaking to. Your familiarity will show, often breaking down barriers and getting you some valuable time with the right person.
Script What You Can
Obviously you can?t write down every nuance and turn of the conversation, but at least jot down the things you can ? greetings, questions, names, etc. That way you have something to work from when you?re nervous or you get sidetracked. If you haven?t tried this technique before, you?ll be pleasantly surprised at what having this fallback can do for your confidence. And don?t necessarily use proper English for your script. Keep it professional sounding but write it the way you really speak. Say it outloud and modify it if the wording is too stiff or unnatural.
